In Kent County, the 17th Circuit Court, with three or more judges, is required to set up a Specialized Business Docket. This docket is a schedule of cases and legal disputes that promote consistency in decisions, improve the efficiency of administering business cases in the 17th Circuit Court, and develop a body of case law on business-law issues at the trial-court level. These dockets guide the local business community. Michigan Court Rules govern all areas of the cases. The right to a trial by jury is preserved and will proceed in the same fashion as the general Civil Division. Appeals are handled by the SBD and are given to the Court of Appeals.

Dockets are documents of each case and a schedule of when they will be heard. The SBD is only for business dockets, and other cases will be assigned to the courts that apply.
